The overall objective of the project is to upgrade the area while preserving the identity of the various locations.

In particular, the project aims to intensify the relationships between the functional spaces to help bring the many layers of history back to life.

Each space was analysed in detail to identify its ability to host customers and accommodate various kinds of new features in terms of its urban location, its potential to be converted, its perceptual and architectural characteristics and its historical and evocative qualities.

In order to identify strategies of rejuvenation and "functional" osmosis with the rest of the city, the decision was made to turn the analyses and observations into three sweeping motifs: the first being "vessels" for visitor attractions, the second open spaces and the third a network for vehicle and pedestrian traffic and parking.

The overarching theme is layers of history, an idea which is more theoretical than practical for those who use the space, who see the role of the project as identifying and redeveloping sections of the paths such that those who walk along them are able to piece together the historical narrative and in so doing to build up a picture of the area's identity.
